In the initial marketing phase only the private sector acquired
rope pumps. Later on the W&S sector included the rope pump as
an/the option for rural water supply.
The rope pump is used in:
- Water and sanitation sector
- Family wells
- Community wells
- Agriculture purposes
- Small scale irrigation
- Cattle watering
Who are these organizations involved?
- The traditional State Water & Sanitation sector
- The traditional Multilateral Organizations (e.g.UNICEF, WHO),
International NGO's (CARE) and various Bilateral W&S programs
- Not traditional in this field: e.g. EHP, Médicins sans Frontières,
Save the Children, Foster Parents, Red Cross, Catholic Relief
Services etc. (By hundreds and thousands)
- (All) national NGO's involved in rural development programs
Who produces the rope pump?
Besides the firm Bombas de Mecate S.A. there are about 10
workshops in Nicaragua producing rope pumps.
How many pumps?
Around 20,000 rope pumps were installed in Nicaragua since 1990.
Present production rate: 3,000 pumps a year.
Around 90% still operating. (Makes 18,000)
2,000 pumps on Community wells with a mean of 80 costumers, makes
160,000 costumers.
15,000 pumps on Family wells with a mean of 20 costumers,
makes 300,000 costumers.
(3,000 pumps for agriculture purposes.)
Rural population is around 2,000,000 persons which means that
460,000 or 23% receives water through a rope pump. (Around 20%
of the population in rural area has access in or outside their
houses to piped water systems. Other traditional water sources
are rivers, streams and surface water (30%), besides hand dug
wells (37%).)
Annual increase:
- 500 rope pumps on community wells (Drilled or hand dug wells)
with a mean of 80 users. Makes 40,000 a year.
- 2,500 rope pumps on family wells with a mean of 20 users.
Makes 50,000 a year.
- Totaling 90.000 new users a year or an additional 4.5 % of
the rural population a year.
Pump density: 0.01 pump per capita rural population.
