Durban 2003, ROPE PUMP WORKSHOP.

A Rope Pump Workshop was held on June 5th 2003 in the afternoon after the HTN Forum, Durban, Johannesburg.
This workshop can be considered as a follow-up to the "First International Rope Pump Policy Workshop" held in Nicaragua, May 2001. The additional half-day facilities required for this workshop were fully financed through funds available for the HTN-Forum.

Objectives of this Rope Pump Workshop were:
- Bring different organizations involved in rope pump applications together in order to get to interchange of information on technical experiences and very important interchange on introduction policies and barriers encountered.
- Develop strategies that could accelerate the adoption of the rope pump as an additional option in rural water supply policies.

About sixty representatives out of twenty different countries assisted the workshop.
The rope pump workshop was chaired by Moses Gava, Directorate of Water Development, Uganda and member of the HTN Steering Committee.
Interesting presentations were made on developments in several countries e.g. Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritania, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Uganda, Benin, Afghanistan, and Burkina Faso. Many representatives expressed their keen interest to take up the rope pump within their programmes or policies. As well the UNICEF Water, Environment and Sanitation Section announced that it is involved in initiatives to incorporate the rope pump as an additional option in rural water supply in several countries.
The conclusions and recommendations of the Managua workshop were accepted by the representatives as still being valid.
