Zambia

In May 2000 six rope pumps were sent over from Nicaragua to the RITS Project in Zambia (Research Into Improvement of Traditional Sources, funded by DFID)

These pumps were distributed over the country and installed in the Northern, Western and Central provinces and near the capital. Different organizations have supervised the installation amongst which Department of Water Affairs, District Health Management, a District WASHE Committee and Peace Corps.

The ease of installation and operation was appreciated by the technicians while the users were impressed by the amount of water delivered.
First observations indicate that prime materials are readily available in order to make national production possible. Technical capacity neither is expected to be a major issue. A private sector user market is expected in especially provincial capitals and peri-urban areas. Interest for local production was expressed although no further actions in this field have been reported.
