In Papua New Guinea the University of Technology, Department of Appropriate Technology & Community Development Institute (ATCDI) assists rural communities in water supply projects and also promotes good sanitation.
Training of rural community on how to dig shallow wells and fit hand pumps is part of this programme.
Using locally available materials and skills, the "rope & washer" pump is easily fabricated. The pump has proved to be very popular and quite a number is installed in especially in Markham valley where the shallow well can easily be dug.
Training workshops are held at community level on how to fabricate such pumps for themselves. A video documentary showing the simple fabrication techniques is available.
