In 1998 the NGO TARATRA took the initiative for a test of three different handpumps, respectively the Afridev, the Malda and the Rope Pump. In 1999, pumps of each type were installed in Madagascar among which three rope pumps imported from Nicaragua.
In 2000 all pump types were evaluated on criteria such as performance, easy maintenance and user comments.

The Malda Pump and the Rope Pump were chosen according to the preference of the users. After a survey on the possibility of local production, the rope pump had the best chance. The process was assisted by SKAT-HTN.

The first locally produced rope pumps were already manufactured in 1999 shortly after arrival of the Nicaraguan rope pumps. The "Madagascar Version" is based on the Nicaraguan design with some changes, which were necessary due to availability of local material and which considered the comments of the users. Redesign and specifications were prepared in collaboration with SKAT-HTN.

TARATRA invested in the installation of a small workshop which is managed as a private enterprise. Production takes place in the Middle/South of Madagascar in a relative remote area. Over 100 pumps have been produced and installed.

All parts of the rope pump are produced in the small workshop of Atelier T+ according to sketches or samples, but the required quality standard has not yet been reached. Due to the lack of basic jigs and fixtures for manufacturing and assembling, each pump is like a prototype. (This is the situation at the start of 2001, updated information will be provided as soon as possible.)

Production through the private sector in the capital Antananarivo is considered as substantial orders are to be expected.

The depth's of the 500 dug wells built by TARATRA is between 8 and 15 metres.
