Lao P.D.R.

At the end of 1998 the National University of Laos assisted by the UNICEF office took the initiative to start rope pump production based on technical documentation prepared in Nicaragua.

Training workshops on the production and installation have been held with participants of all the provinces. Production and installation manuals were translated into the national language.
Private sector producers showed interest in producing the rope pump. Production takes place through local workshops with several hundreds produced.
Actual production rate of several dozens a month.
Pump cost is around US$ 70.- with most pumps installed on dug wells.

In Lao there are about 5,000 dug wells and 4,000 boreholes, some equipped with handpumps.
Good performance on handdug wells but less successful on boreholes due to guidebox failures and subsequent rope breakage. Application up to 20 metres depth. Upgrading is foreseen for deeper application.
