The Gambia

Concern Universal in The Gambia started in 2002 with the initiative to include rope pumps in their programme. The required technical information is in place and by mid 2003 the first forty good quality rope pumps for hand drilled boreholes were produced already. In cooperation with other organizations a programme for further introduction, training and quality improvement is strived after. High social acceptance is received with a big demand for these pumps. Much of the demand is from small scale farmers (mostly women) who want the pumps to irrigate their land. They see an investment in a pump as a good way of increasing their income. These applications are an important means to improve food security and reduce rural poverty.
Sustainable pump production is foreseen given the demand already met.
