Ethiopia

Ethiopia is a country with a high percentage rural population (>80%), low GDP per capita and very serious drought consequences. Rural water supply is mainly through traditional unprotected water sources and water for productive uses is a high priority also under these circumstances.

In Ethiopia an initiative towards rope pump introduction is in its initial phase. The non-profit and indigenous NGO, Water Action prepared a feasibility study defining as well the future actions required. This action is supported by The African Families Foundation (TAFF), a charitable organization based in the United Kingdom involved in developing work in African countries by providing opportunities, in particular to women and children. Water Action is involved in the fight against rural poverty through development programs that integrate the provision of safe and adequate water supplies, hygiene education, sanitation and natural resources protection and development.

The objective of the performed study is to introduce the rope pump technology including its technical features, working principles, production and maintenance aspects to the poor and needy community thereby to increase poor women's access to and benefit from potable water those who are suffering from lack of water supply services. Based on the findings of the feasibility study, follow up actions are now defined.
[Redundant to mention that this initiative requires and merits further institutional support, seen the difficult situation Ethiopia experiences.]
