Ecuador
Already in 1993 two rope pumps were installed in Ecuador. This initiative was supported by the "Centro Informazione Terzo Mundo" based in Quito, and MOSLIV (both Italian organizations).
The pumps were imported from Nicaragua and installed by members of the Nicaraguan rope pump firm in respectively Mercedes de Agua Sucia, Canton el Carmen, Manabi Province and in Sucua (Oriente).
Rope pump production was continued by two workshops in El Carmen in the Manabí Province (Costa) and in Lago Agrio, in the Sucua Province (Oriente).
Recent information was provided by CARE-Ecuador in Macas, a little city in the Amazonian area, and by the Netherlands Service of Cooperation (SNV- Ecuador), indicating that the initiatives in the Sucua Province had continued over the years.
CARE, SNV and others work in partnership in the "Amazonia Programme" (Programa de la Amazonía) in the Morona Santiago Province in the southern border region (with Peru), that includes providing water and sanitation.
Rope pumps have been installed in the Transcutucú region (Province of Morona Santiago), a flat and non-vehicule access zone, the last two years. At present 25 rope pumps have been installed, with a local group of "microenterpricers" of shuar and achuar ethnias. The programme contributed to the formation of a small enterprise for production, installation and maintenance of rope pumps and they attend as well the demand of institutions, local governments and NGO's. In fact, the rope pumps are providing sure water for nearest one thousand Shuar families successfully.
Director of this firm is Carlos Mashu.
