Congo

SOLIDARITES works in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) since 2000 and in Kalémie District, on the banks of Tanganika Lake, since 2002.
The rope pump reproduction was initiated during a pilot project funded by UNICEF from November 2006 to May 2007. This experimental project aimed at encouraging the prototypes in order to decrease the cholera and waterborne diseases which affect the populations of Tanganyika Lake banks.
We have initiated the local manufacturing of two hand pumps: the rope pump and a simple piston pump. After a comparison period, we finally keep the rope pump model. In May2007, the action continued thanks to the funding of the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO), who made the spreading of the experimental project on a bigger scale possible.
